D’yer remember down in that northern town
When the boys last played away
Did I tell you though we lost today
It’ll all work out okay?

Good times are round the corner
I can feel it in me bones
Surely fate will kindly shine down on us
Away and then at home

Fickle folk who laugh and joke
At what are called real fans
Get on their bikes and disappear
When the proverbial hits the fan

When the programme notes are boring
As boring as the team
It’s not us who are snoring
Cos we still harbour dreams

When the motorway seems endless
Yer defence is showing cracks
Yer never ever friendless
When yer cheering on the chaps

Though her indoors might think you crazy
Week in week out defeats
Is she jealous of the love you share
With a bunch of blokes / birds she never meets?

When that time has come when its gone past fun
And yer stood there near to tears
When that joke you thought yer saviour
Is driving you to beer

When things are bad the season’s endless
Yet you still manage to show up
You can understand why blokes have benders
Drowning sorrow in their cups

Yer working week seems so oblique
With ridicule and jest
Everybody’s up for joshing you
But you still stand the test

Saturday comes the tiniest crumbs
You’d take from this one game
That make you think its getting better
All thanks to what’s ‘is name

When the interval comes calling
You only see the good
Though the other sides fans are galling
Pointing out that you’re no good

A bad word said about yer team
Is a personal attack
Despite it all you still stand up
For that cumbersome full back
¶ 13

Will you wilt like out of season blades of grass
Yellow dry and wan
Or will you swallow yer pie dry yer eyes and get on with it
Cos you’re a die hard football fan?
