We couldn’t do it on the football pitch but then we wouldn’t want to evoke another touchline tantrum from Monsieur Whinger, wouldn’t want him to blot the good name of the Beautiful Game, so we let ’em win, just to keep the peace, let ourselves be fleeced. We’d sent our agent in months before to […]
Ah that’s better! Instead of the dire fold to the Red Devils on Sunday, some fight! The battling Reds of Liverpool are back again, keeping us on the edge of our seats, knocking in the goals between the poles: might not always be pretty but let’s show ’em we have guts, get off our butts […]
Liverpool go down to defeat again: another dire result as Scholes jabs one over Reina’s parrying arm and Ferdinand rifles in from the right side of the penalty area. A knock- out, one goal each half: that’s how it should be done! And meanwhile Rafa Benitez gesticulates on the sidelines in the technical area, a […]
Theo Walcott, our forgotten man of the World Cup — Sven’s secret weapon, never used except to warm the bench — explodes like an Exocet in the Under-21s with two clinical goals to beat the German U-21s 2-0 in Leverkusen — while in Zagreb the senior team wobbles to a 2-0 defeat to Croatia. English […]
I’m getting ready to watch Germany and Italy go at it in the World Cup Semi-Final in Dortmund but this is the US of A and ESPN is airing Nathan’s hotdog eating contest to celebrate this nation’s birthday (well the US are out aren’t they?). The contestants are stuffing wieners in their mouths, as many […]

Hi Denys,
Yes Richard Williams you’re a brilliant wordsmith, my friend. When I first saw your football poetry I thought it was the superb Guardian sports and music writer. I once had the honour of sitting next to Richard Williams while at the Independent on the sports desk. He writes about music and sport with immense knowledge and authority. I’ve read a couple of Richard’s books recently. Great writer rather like you Richard Williams the Pompey fan. Congratulations on promotion.

Hi Joe
Shouldn’t your title read your poem Farewell Europe England to everyone exccept Aston Villa ?
I know you mention them in your poem , but I do feel sorry for Villa re the national press .
Largely ignored. the hype was was all about Man City & Arsenal with a bit of a nod to the Hammers..but hardly a mention of Villa..
So well done to them

Hi Crispin. Chris Sutton on the radio has gone for a Chelsea v Coventry final. As we know anything can happen in the Cup, and I reckon we can go to the final.
We’re still in with a chance of the play offs too, so lots to go for.

Hey Kev
Let the masses drool over their odds on City v Unted Final, but who knows how pressure can hit.
Cov and Chels will be rightly labelled as having no chance..but hey …stranger things have happened..
so Chelsea v Coventry…that’s the Final for us!
Best
