A game from 73

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 Our proud unbeaten run of 24 games was ended here last night
Blackburn scored the only goal under the dim lit burnden light
33,000 fans turned out the best since 62
Saw a very hard, over tense affair with chances very few
Roy Greaves was just a shadow of himself and rarely in the game
With Warwick Rimmer not quite fit midfield was a little lame
Our forward line was rather small and struggled a bit for height
When Phillips and Waldron got in their cross the ball was lost in flight
So Blackburn got their winner through a Charlie Wright mistake
Fazackerley in the 78th min was there to take the bait
But my eyes were rarely on the game but focused on the crowd
The atmosphere electric and chanting very loud
So rarely had we ever seen such a gate for division three
Burnden park alive again a beautiful sight to see

Notes

I wrote this shortly after the Blackburn game at Burnden park 28 march 1973 a Wednesday evening game.Bolton were 24 games unbeaten before Blackburn beat us in front of a 33,000 fans. Both teams as I recall very poor on the night Bolton just about shading it but Blackburn got the only goal to end that proud record.
With so many fans turning up for the game some Blackburn fans never even bothered to get off their train as the carraiges were shunted to the sidings behind the embankment end of the ground having a near perfect view.
