Another Old Joke Poeticised

The Army and the Airforce were playing for the Cup,
Though the Airforce were one player shy.
They waited a bit, but he didn’t turn up,
But they hoped he’d arrive by and by.
¶ 2

And so the match started, eleven ‘gainst ten,
The Army with one player more,
But the Airforce defended and pulled back their men,
And the Army could not get a score.

Then the Airforce broke out with a ball down the flank,
Attacking the Army with flair,
And the quick outside right, charging on like a tank,
Crossed the ball very high in the air.

Down from the sky came a small parachute,
With the player the Airforce were missing.
And he met the high ball with a firm, sturdy boot,
And into the net it went hissing.

The ref scratched his head, ‘midst the roar of the crowd,
As the Army voiced grave discontent.
At length, he adjudged it should be disallowed,
And he booked the new man for descent.
