Does This Happen In Any Other Industry?

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 The leader of this Septic Isle
Has had the job for quite a while.
A million hands our Bertie shook
To gain the post of our Taoiseach.
He’s always there to press the flesh
At openings of pub and crèche.

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 A common man with common touch,
The people like him very much.
He likes a pint, and bit of chat
[And is often photoed doing that.]
And people say he can’t be bad,
For he’s perceived as footie mad.

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 His favourite teams? I wonder can you
Guess at all? Celtic and Man Yew?
Remarkably, his football teams
Reflect the current trend, it seems.
For every Irish barstool fan
Is a Celtic / Man United man.

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 He’s even been on television
Expounding on his football vision.
Sitting up with Johnny Giles,
Crafty winks and knowing smiles,
Slicked-back hair and smartly dressed,
The lads in Fagan’s are impressed.

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 Now I have never claimed to be
Pre-eminent at geography,
But did I really have a dream
That Celtic were a Scottish team?
And was I giv’n to understand
That Manchester’s in En-ger-land?

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 The leader of this troubled nation
Surely has an obligation,
Politically and morally
To support this nation’s industry.
Why would he champion industries
That pay their taxes overseas?

7 Leave a comment on verse 7 0 The Eircom League is so exciting,
Entertaining and delighting.
The Dept. of Trade and Enterprise
Should go out there and advertise,
Preach it, sell it, push it, fund it,
To every barstool football pundit.

8 Leave a comment on verse 8 0 But there is little chance of that,
When B.Ahern goes out to bat
For English and for Scottish teams,
Already rich beyond their dreams,
While here at home, the League’s repressed
Because of lack of interest.

Notes

No offence to Celtic and Man U fans, but what chance has our league got, when even the leader of the country is actively promoting foreign industry at the expense of indigenous industry?
