Football is…

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 … where boys learn about love, grass stains and passion
long before they discover girls
…where fashion icons style their hair, pulling the plug
on curtains and poodle perms

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 …learning about maths, 4-4-2 and 4-5-1
all four one and won four all
…the field of green where boys learn to dream
and survive when their hearts are torn

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 …learning to express emotion without fear of words spoken
singing, chanting, belonging
…letting off steam: when boiling point is reached
the referee makes right wrong

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 …learning sportsmanship
the benefit of teamwork

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 and boys become men who can’t understand why
there are people who don’t get football

Notes

I won’t apologise for the boy/man slant as football is still under male domination, though things are changing. Soccer in the Sands 2006 at Great Yarmouth this year included a girls tournament for the first time. In total, over 800 youngsters represented 106 teams and, out in the sunshine, playing on the beach, it wasn’t all about winning – the important thing was the opportunity to take part.
