For Rebecca (Another Soccer Season)

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 You said you’d try to score a goal today
If I came on over and watched you play
I know you can score every now and then
But only play real hard, do the best you can

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 It’s nice to win, but only do the best you can

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 I know you like to take throw ins and free kicks
And pass the ball with a little flick
You wish you played like Arsenal’s #7
But just remember that you’re only 11

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 It’s nice to win, but only do the best you can

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 You know that you make me proud
On the sideline nobody cheers as loud
Even when the other team is so much better
You and your teammates always stick together

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 It’s nice to win, but only do the best you can

7 Leave a comment on verse 7 0 What you’re doing is so much more than a game
I know you’re not seeking any soccer fame
You and all those little girls, your teammates
Are getting head starts out of life’s starting gates

8 Leave a comment on verse 8 0 It’s nice to win, but only do the best you can

9 Leave a comment on verse 9 0 Grow up confident Rebecca, grow up proud
Score those other goals and celebrate loud
It really doesn’t matter which way the ball bends
Keep your head held high, be true to your friends

10 Leave a comment on verse 10 0 As you grow remember your team now and then
Remember that it’s nice to win
But what is even more important is

11 Leave a comment on verse 11 0 Doing the best that you can

Notes

For my daughter, Rebecca, who is 11 years old and is looking forward to next month when the new season starts for her. She’s itching to kick that ball!
