How My Football Career Ended

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 Playing football in the yard,
First years and all girls are barred,
Playing with a tennis ball,
Goal chalked out upon the wall,
On the grass is out of bounds,
While the teacher does her rounds.
School shoes getting scuffed and dirty,
Winning thirty-seven – thirty,
Evening time and out to play,
Perfect way to end the day,
Throwing coats upon the ground,
Build them up and make a mound,
Sunny evenings and we’re blessed,
Bagsy I be Georgie Best.
Later still and it’s a dream
Playing for the old school team,
Skipping maths to go and play
Different schools so far away.
Teenage years so full of pride,
Sunday morning football side,
Just a different set of friends,
Each attaining common ends,
Laughter, messing, jealousies,
Wintergreen and muddy knees….

Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha….

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 The Damned, the Buzzcocks, the Ramones,
Iggy Pop, the Undertones,
New York Dolls and X-Ray Spex,
The Jam and Generation X,
Eater, Wire and Souxsie Sue,
Subway Sect and Adverts too
Penetration and the Boys
Rezillos and The Stinky Toys
Television, Talking Heads,
Debbie Harry ripped to shreds,
Boomtown Rats and Richard Hell,
Slaughter and the Dogs as well,
The Radiators, SLF,
Tenpole Tudor till I’m deaf
Mick, Paul, Topper and Joe Strummer
Knocked the spots off Donna Summer
David Jansen, Johnny Thunder,
Wiped the smile off Stevie Wonder,
Steve and Sid and John and Paul,
Could not mix with my football.

On the glorious rock of punk.

Notes

Yes, of course, now I realise that they need not be mutually exclusive, but I was a pretty monochromed 16 year old.
