1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 I’ll always connect him, with warm Athens nights
Trophy lid perched on his head
Grainy pictures, mono camera’s had beamed in to our lives
As excited, we went to our beds

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 We’d done, we’d won it, it was hard to take in
As the buzz kept the sleep from young eyes
We watched him and the boys dance ecstatic with joy
Such a night relived, time after time

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 Next mornings papers were full of us
He spoke to the press, of the joy,
Of winning the cup, they were on the way up
With a team full of home grown young boys

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 Strong as an ox and so fearless
He took digs and dished out sly clouts
In the days when our idols were geezers
Who’d no need for commitment spelt out

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 Never heard of him, much, in the later years
When the game changed for better or worse
Tis said there were ructions, all down to the beer
As he slagged off pub punters and birds

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 Then back in the frame he came once again
Like a sepia print from the past
Only this time, he’s aged beyond all recognition
Due to hours spent in spielers and bars*

The drink had got right out of hand
Not the heady bouquet of expensive fine wine
But the gut rot that comes in a can

8 Leave a comment on verse 8 0 “How the mighty have fallen” the old saying goes
I suppose you could say, that, that’s right
But for me, I’ll always see him with the lid of the trophy,
Perched on his head, as he danced on… a warm Athens night!

Notes

* Spieler is Yiddish for an illegal drinking club where gambling usually takes place. Used to be very popular after the pubs had closed in London, in the afternoon or late at night.

What does the PFA do about these poor old pro’s from days gone by?

I’ve been hearing a couple of stories very similar to the one above, just recently.
