If We Don’t Beat Thingummyjig

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 now if we don’t beat thingummyjig
we might as well give up
we never go the distance
in any flipping cup

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 this quarter final hoodoo
that hangs above us all
so high above our pleasant land
all players great and small

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 politically correct these days
but we recall the day
we ‘d never heard of some of these
‘great’ countries that we play

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 the problem’s growing daily
our expectations rise
we look through spectacles of red
with crosses in our eyes

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 and oh how average are we?
our local choice grows thin
we’re always missing our top names
whenever we begin

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 the myth of days of sixty six
a sword above our head
so if we don’t beat thingummyjig
I’m going back to bed

7 Leave a comment on verse 7 0 we pray like pilgrims bound for Lourdes
we kneel within our grotto
great expectations- great disappointments
that should be our motto

Notes

Oh England….no such thing as ‘minnows’ anymore…but am I alone in thinking we need to stop believing our own (and the media’s hype) and also to stop blaming all the foreign imports….let’s get real…
just substitute ‘thingummyjig’ for Estonia, Macedonia, Israel..or anyone apart from Brazil or Germany that we have had to face over the last 40 years….how ordinary are we….
tick one for VERY
2 for QUITE
3 for TOTALLY……………so “Come on England!”
