IN MEMORIAM: BOB STOKOE

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 Sunderland fans can see him still
in trade-mark trilby and flapping coat
racing across the Wembley turf
to wrap young Monty in warm embrace.
Such memories do not fade:
they are football’s immortality. .

Notes

Bob Stokoe (21 Sept 1930 – 1 Feb. 2004) was manager of Sunderland when the Second Division underdogs defeated mighty Leeds 1-0 in the 1973 FA Cup Final, thanks to Ian Porterfield’s goal and Jimmy Montgomery’s incredible double-save.
