Night Of Nights

A balmy May evening in 1972 – absolute tension in
The air – much more than an end of season game.
At stake, for the men in white, a League & Cup double.
Their opponents a moderate mid-table team – nothing
Too difficult for the talented Yorkshire outfit, or so it
Seemed. They’d won the Cup forty eight hours earlier –
And now was to come the crowning glory, so thousands
Of their supporters in the Molineux stands believed.
A rare excitement crackled on that mild spring night.

But it didn’t go to plan…the Wolves fought a gallant
Fight, excelling their routine abilities to keep up with
Those supermen from the north; amazingly, they scored
Once, then a second. The so-confident, slick-passing
Favourites were floundering – unable to penetrate a
Stubborn rearguard that withstood the onslaught, until
A late berach from Bremner – to no avail, the game ended
In a ferment; home fans ecstatic, the white roses withered;
Revie in despair – another fall short of the winning post.

So Derby won the title, without playing – Clough elated,
His nemesis vanquished so sweetly – thanks to Wanderers.
Then rumours began, as to what motivated those Midlanders
To play so fiercely, their pride so clearly stung; Someone
Suggested attempts at bribery from a team so talented,
Yet so beset by its insecurities to attempt the unspeakable.
The truth never quite cleared, but 53,000 witnessed something
Special – an electric atmosphere inspired McGarry’s men
Towards victory; a match long-remembered, but not for Leeds…
