OCTOBER 1966

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 OCTOBER 1966

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 Reach Out I’ll Be There at number one,
pounding from the Tannoy at half-time.
Fifty-five thousand on a Wednesday night;
three-nil against Spurs, all second-half goals.
Crushed in the Fulham Road queue
for the tube, walking on air; nothing
they could say to me at school next day.
We were, briefly, top of the league.
Whatever they said, I wouldn’t care.

Notes

He’s not mentioned in the poem, but Chelsea had just bought the late Tony Hateley, for a then British record transfer fee of £100,000, after Peter Osgood had broken his leg
