Russia nil Aston Villa nil

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 On any other Given night,
It would’ve been six to none
But the Russians hadn’t figured
On Shay and Richard Dunne

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 The Red machine came ploughing through,
As if they had a Given right,
But big Richard Dunne was waiting
And itching for a fight.
The Russkies did the Nazi’s
They had Napoleon on the run
But when they chased the Irish
They met with Richard Dunne.

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 They threw the kitchen sink at Shay
They even fired the taps,
But the Villa keeper showed them
Why he’s been Given all his caps.
He made saves out — of this world,
Especially from Arshavin
And he was meaner with his rebounds
Than a farmer boy from Cavan.
The game was one way traffic
It definitely weren’t a thriller
But the Russkies couldn’t find a way
Past the mighty pair from Villa.
They sweetly passed the ball around
Slipped it through Irish legs for fun
But when they got near to the box
They met with Richard Dunne.

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 Bleeding from a head wound
Dunne was briefly out of play
But when the tanks came bursting through
Shay kept them at bay.
Dunne returned to defend his cause
Despite the bloody pain
And gave the wounded boys in green
Still hope to make Ukraine.

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 The Reds made one last effort
As the Irish chased the ball
But they encountered Dunne from Tallaght
And Shay from Donegal.

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 So Ireland got a nil-nil draw
Despite being over-run
but they’ll have to thank that Villa pair
Brave Shay and Richard Dunne.

Notes

We’ve all heard of one man shows but this was a two man show. Funny how football works. If Ireland had conceded a goal in injury time the press would have had the knives out for Trappatoni. They would have complained about the defensive attitude etc. Now, especially after the Armenia result it is being hailed as the best defensive display since the Alamo. Going to go right to the wire. Could be plenty of Poles and Ukrainians who used to work in Ireland getting phone calls soon asking them for a floor to crash on for a few weeks in June.
