Socrates Signs for Garforth Town (2004 Revisited)

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 From the cradle of the Beautiful Game
The teeming passion of the Maracana
Swapping the brilliance of the yellow shirt
For the badge of Garforth Town
The man of principles plays before 3000 disciples
Not that much less than the 200,000 in Rio perhaps
When in spirit football counts not in numbers but hearts
A doctor by profession whose slender shadow
Danced upon the greatest pitches with
The unearthly genius of Zico
Now gathers in a dressing room
With his new team-mates
Determined Yorkshire playmakers,
Gardeners, electricians
And pit men…
God’s finest no less.

Socrates RIP 1954-2011
Editors Note: We’ve revisited this poem which was written around the time of Socrates one and only 12 minute apearance as a sub for Garforth Town. Always one of our favourite poems from Parry, a long-time contributor, much appreciated author and former Football Poets admin person.
