The boy, the ball and nothing more

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 When the world began to come too close
And argument grew from honest debate
It became time for the boy to go where he goes
Ball at his feet, gently lifting the latch on the gate

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 The boy, the ball and nothing more
Beyond calling range, over creek and field
To the only place where he felt sure
His wound up time and life could be unreeled

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 Curiously spaced trees, corner posts and goal
A split trunk before a gnarled, hard centre back
Exposed roots drove his precision in control
Rounding the static defence with his relentless attack

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 A forty thousand-seat stadium in imagination
Rehearsing last minute winners, hour upon hour
Dusk fades to black and he stills the ball in resignation
Time to return to the questions, the worry, the glower

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 Brick mushrooms sprang where the woods grew before
And onwards the years slowly rolled and spilled
No place now for the boy, the ball and nothing more
No sunlit glory, no cheering, no football dreams fulfilled
