The Cup that Cheers

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 Gutsy Gulls and Gills
pit their wits against
so called big guns:
narrow win and loss
their respective results.
Poppies will be worn with
pride as Kettering,
first non-league team
in next round, face Fulham.
Nation waits with bated breath
the performance of two
other ‘minnows’, Blyth and Histon.
Millionaires from City humbled
by Championship strugglers Forest;
their namesakes from Nailsworth
pushing Derby all the way
on frozen New Lawn.
Now the two East Midlands rivals
will do battle in round 4.
Liverpool’s reward for
disposing proud Preston
a Merseyside derby with Everton.
Pools of Victoria Park
have a home tie with the Hammers,
their bonus after seeing off Stoke.
‘Boro beat Barrow but
only narrowly 2-1;
Blue Square Premier boys
take 7,000 to the Riverside
whilst 9,000 make the Pilgrimage
to the Emirates, proof that
the magic of the cup is still alive.

Notes

What a great cup weekend in spite of David Pleat’s increasingly addled commentary. Superb performances by so called lesser teams a reminder to all that the FA Cup remains a fantastic competition. Rumours of its demise are surely exaggerated. Some brilliant ties to look forward to in round 4.
