The Floodlights

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 I’m looking up at the floodlights
That are beaming down on to the pitch
They’re the only thing, we can see for free
Now our games become so rich

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 If yer in the street they tower
Over roofs and high rise blocks
Then come the chosen hour and a half
They’ll illuminate our lot

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 We used to try and climb them
To get a better view
But now they have them atop the stand
T’would be a dicey thing to do

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 On concrete terraces they stood
Like pyramids of steel
There’s a rumour one wobbled in high winds
Though I’m not sure that was real

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 In empty grounds we milled around them
Before important games
Like “Let’s meet behind the stumps at The Oval”?
Nah, I’m not sure that’s the same

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 In sparse stadia of the sixties
Where only ‘toffs’ had the seats
They welcomed us brightly from “The Worlds End”*
Through a myriad of tight narrow strreets

7 Leave a comment on verse 7 0 Like King Kong in the pictures
Who rose above a city
Floodlights seem to make harsh nights
Dare I say it, powerful and at the same time… pretty?

8 Leave a comment on verse 8 0 When there’s light at the end of the tunnel
As the players run o to the pitch
It’s the floodlights that show us excitement and angst
Though some times I wish I’d the switch

9 Leave a comment on verse 9 0 To turn it all off so I don’t have to watch
When everything’s going pear shaped
It’s just a thought, quite stupid of course
How would me and me mates find our gate?

10 Leave a comment on verse 10 0 Shine on, shine on floodlights
Shine down on me team
So there’s no where to hide
For the mistakes in our side
And it’s lightly (sic) that I’ll see ’em’!

Notes

* The Worlds End, a pub in the Kings Road, Chelsea, that, just after passing, the blaze of light from the floodlights from Stamford Bridge comes in to view and you’re on your way to see them Blueboys play!
