This Football Thing

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 Can’t all be champagne
and laughter and roses.
Late to complain
about after it closes,
Like rain in the summer,
’twas best in small doses,
this football thing I had with you

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 When we met the supply
fell far short of demand.
You could send me so high
with a touch, make me stand,
but then you’d barely try
or it seemed over-planned,
this football thing I had with you

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 This football thing
doesn’t need a correction,
or modification,
or closer inspection.
Some things aren’t candidates
for resurrection,
A soldier can never live down
his defection.

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 From the time that we met
‘til we formed our own band,
the wish of each other:
our every command,
but those vows were goodbyes
before we’d understand
this football thing I had with you.

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 We’re past shedding tears,
and we’re past getting nervous.
It won’t bear a monument’s
weight, or a service.
Enough that we sang once
and somebody heard us,
this football thing I had with you.

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 You kept playing but sky
never quite touched the sand
or this football thing I had with you.
