Ruined By A Kiss

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 we gazed enchanted here at home
as swept along each day
through early morning matches
on evenings far away
we sensed a #Me Too moment
a raised and valiant fist
the tournament that ebbed and flowed
until the dreaded kiss

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 we watched as bold newcomers shone
and favourites headed home
the Lionesses reached new heights
but they were not alone
as diff’rences on paper
for those without support
exposed a game still governed
by male power and thought

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 was I alone in feeling
excited how it’s grown
the stunning vibe among the fans
out there and back at home?
as rank outsiders shone then fell
and penalties were missed
how sad that now it’s over
we focus on a kiss

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 and how sad too that Spain’s success
unfolded in it’s way
to then be overshadowed
and tainted on that day
for though the Women’s game’s advanced
there’s still so much to do
it’s time for men to move aside
as we embrace the new
those dinosaurs who ruled so long
no longer can exist
we will not let this moment
be ruined by a kiss

Notes

Spain clinched their first Women’s World Cup in Sydney , Australia on Sunday 20th August 2023.,

However the scandal began just moments after La Roja’s historic 1-0 victory against England, when the head of the Spanish football federation (RFEF), Luis Rubiales, kissed midfielder Jennifer Hermoso on the lips.

Rubiales, 46, said he made a mistake but that the kiss was consensual. Hermoso, 33, said she did not give her permission and felt violated.
