When the underground was heaving
And the carriage full of chat
Of the art that you’d be seeing
When you turned up at the match

When the Earls Court sign came in to view
And young voices raised their pitch
From excitement filled companion ways
Full of bright eyed expectant kids

As West Brompton came the jam packed train
Could barely move it’s doors
As the punters cheering echoed loud
Like the waves on pebbled shores

Catch the bus to see yer idols
Stroll the Kings Road in royal blue
In the days when working class heroes
Were like mates that we all knew

When mere street Gods could, maybe, grace the sod
Of the team that locals cheered
Then to workman’s clubs or a post match pub
Take their turn to buy the beer

I’ve just come here to see him
You can’t help but think, where’s it all gone wrong?
And smile at sepia memories
Whilst deep down inside….. you’re worrying!
