It’s annoying… but Keiron from Rochdale was right;
a 2-1 loss to the boys from the Fylde
and our hopes of survival
were put out of sight.
They say it’s the size of the fight in the dog,
Not the size of the d […] -

Oh! That groan and satisfying clunk of the turnstile;
milling crowds of folk wrapped up in scarves and beanie hats,
catching up on this and that as if it’s been a while,
although, of course, it’s only been a f […] -

A bitter Marsh Lane for Kidderminster,
Cup o’ Bovril and a piping hot Ginsters,
Or something just like one, from out o’ the hatch,
And then, there’s the whistle, and eyes one the match;
Both teams promo […] -

Home to Woking, here awoken were the City boys;
and, thus awakened, broken was grim storyline
that, with glowering shadow thereto threatened;
token of our doubtful minds.2/
Yet, so doubting, could […] -

Tuesday night football, but it feels like you’re cheating
when the air in front of your face doesn’t fog up, just breathing.
But there we were, a balmy 18 degrees,
sky blushing pink over the JR,
six hun […] -

I know what you’re thinking, Hoops;
Two games in… two painful losses;
ahead of Bromley, but points are equal,
a brace from Parker spares our blushes
and off the bottom keeps us.Forty-four games still t […]

So, Rochdale at home, and there’s a lot to unpack,
(a tough one today, but I think we missed Zac…)we kept a good shape, pretty strong at the back,
(but, still, we were definitely missing Zac…),we moved […]

I can’t wait.
I cannot wait for that groaning clunk as the turnstile spins and spits us out,
and the Saturday crowd all mills about
at Court Place Farm.
I can’t wait.
I cannot wait to be queueing for tea at […] -

The day has come, boys;
a long grey morning; fans gathering;
bus departing and a thousand radios crackling…

Hi Denys,
Yes Richard Williams you’re a brilliant wordsmith, my friend. When I first saw your football poetry I thought it was the superb Guardian sports and music writer. I once had the honour of sitting next to Richard Williams while at the Independent on the sports desk. He writes about music and sport with immense knowledge and authority. I’ve read a couple of Richard’s books recently. Great writer rather like you Richard Williams the Pompey fan. Congratulations on promotion.

Hi Joe
Shouldn’t your title read your poem Farewell Europe England to everyone exccept Aston Villa ?
I know you mention them in your poem , but I do feel sorry for Villa re the national press .
Largely ignored. the hype was was all about Man City & Arsenal with a bit of a nod to the Hammers..but hardly a mention of Villa..
So well done to them

Hi Crispin. Chris Sutton on the radio has gone for a Chelsea v Coventry final. As we know anything can happen in the Cup, and I reckon we can go to the final.
We’re still in with a chance of the play offs too, so lots to go for.

Hey Kev
Let the masses drool over their odds on City v Unted Final, but who knows how pressure can hit.
Cov and Chels will be rightly labelled as having no chance..but hey …stranger things have happened..
so Chelsea v Coventry…that’s the Final for us!
Best
