It’s not just us humans who play Football
Oh no, animals like the beautiful game too
Dolphins like a kickabout with jellyfish
In fact it’s the number one sport in any zoo.Camels like to hump the ball […]

Large towering floodlights illuminating the sky
One end of our ground open to the elements
The smell of cigarettes and cigars in the air
Us small children all down at the front. This is our ground in the swinging […]

If I was a schoolteacher
And my team was a pupil
My early term report would say
They can and must do better. As usual they showed early promise,
Getting off to a very good start
But alas, they couldn’t keep it […] -

Sitting in the stands at the match
Listening to the fans all around me
Not saying anything myself, just listening
Taking in all of the talk that’s going on.The chap next to me is an “expert ”
Knows more about […] -

Went to Blackpool’s Bloomfield Road
To watch the Sky Blues play
Eighteen hundred of us in party mood
Because the game fell on a bank holiday. But as usual the team let us down
They quickly removed the smiles from […] -

Football haters can’t work us out,
why we go season after season
to watch a very average team.Behind our backs they talk,
sniggering as if we’re a bit simple
never understanding our passion.I used to go to the […]

Will you keep it up?Will your support tire
Will fatigue start to creep in
Will you hit the wall ?Very fickle fans

I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floated on high o’er vales and hills
When all at once I saw a crowd
Of football hooligans, so I legged it.What is this life, if full of care,
We have no time to stand and […] -

Looked again at the new fixture list
Just to make sure when the “tasty” games are
You know all the local derbies
And the ones you just can’t miss. Then I checked the Christmas period (sad)
Hoping we’re at home on […] -

Because you meet up with the fans again
Even travelling up as far as Carlisle
By car, van, or on a Virgin train. The banter is all about disastrous holidays

In your local pub
Wearing their Man United shirts

It can end relationships
make you morose, but
it can lift the spirits and

Great poem Mike Bartram. Eddie was a legend, affectionately known in Liverpool as, “the first hooligan.” Even the hoolies were well dressed in those days. The amazing thing was he was only 26 when that picture was taken. He’d played for Everton youth team and was well known to the players. He never got arrested. They threw him out and he climbed back in, just in time for Derek Temples winner.
I used the picture of him being tackled to the ground on the front cover of my book, “Once Upon a rhyme in Football.” It’s worth looking on youtube and finding the re-enactment of the Wembley scene. Frank Skinner and Baddiel went around to Eddies home in the 1990’s and acted it out on the green outside. It’s hilarious, especially all the effort they put in to get Eddie sober enough to shoot the scene.

OK it was 20 years ago but Criag Wilson did write this and a few others on them back in 04/05.
BTW I’m more Forest Green Rover since 2014 (and Chelsea) these days . I drum and am a standing season ticket holder .

Hi Denys,
Yes Richard Williams you’re a brilliant wordsmith, my friend. When I first saw your football poetry I thought it was the superb Guardian sports and music writer. I once had the honour of sitting next to Richard Williams while at the Independent on the sports desk. He writes about music and sport with immense knowledge and authority. I’ve read a couple of Richard’s books recently. Great writer rather like you Richard Williams the Pompey fan. Congratulations on promotion.
