Another day of destiny
Here comes deja vu
Is your glass half full or empty
Depends on your point of view.
Third consecutive play-off final
But the first at home
If you can really call it that
For to Tooting […] -

Half a mile from the station
A delight of a ground
Half decent programme
Admission just five pound.
Out of my local area
Jumped on a train
Headed for Risborough Rangers
No I’m not insane!
A sun setting […] -

I could have gone home after work
Lazily watched DVD’s and stayed in
But with Forest Hill Park playing Kent Football United
That really would have been a sin.
Forget that glorious English failure

Nine times out of ten
A semi-final’s a ‘must win’
But pushing for play-offs with a fixture pile-up
Means losing won’t be a sin.
In the modern world the League’s more important
With going up the ultimate […] -

There’s this one pillar in Catford
Holding up a road sign
When I first moved here it was tainted
Now I’m claiming it as mine.
Stuck on was a Clapton Ultra’s sticker
Like Catford’s where they […] -

It’s third division football
During international week
My mate got me a comp for a Mons game
Which is all I really seek.
Not as in the freebie
But a new ground for a ‘tick’
Royal Albert Elisabeth Mons
Was […] -

It was was a ‘blimey’ moment
As I stood up on that park bench
Losing our Football Club
Would be such an emotional wrench.
Not sure quite what to say
Almost unable to speak
A sea of expectant faces
With our […] -

I got a slap on the wrist
Not hard but gentle and nice
Can I please reel in my poetry
I didn’t have to think twice.
Seems my backlog of poetry
Is clogging up the ‘Football Poets’ site
I really don’t want to […] -

I couldn’t get excited
Try as hard as I might
My heart wasn’t in it
Yet it was a semi-final last night.
Perhaps it was the setting
First game ‘away’ from Champion Hill
Strangely even though it was at […] -

It’s now the early hours
On the coaches heading home
No shame in losing to Macclesfield
As our performances have shown.
It’s been a huge Trophy run
Of which I didn’t dare dream
Despite being knocked out […] -

I wasn’t that impressed
As we drove in at night
If I were forced to live in Pitsea
I’d have to run and take flight.
Looking as dreary as Canvey Island
Just without the seas
Welcome to the delights of […] -

Imagine if you hated yours
I can’t say that’s me
But then I’m rather fortunate
I’ve got the choice of three.
There’s my proper real one
Parents are both brown bread
Don’t see my brother and sisters often
If […] -

When you’re feeling rotten
‘Hair of the dog’ is the cure
But then what happens
When the Youth Team are just as poor?
Not based on performance
But chucking away a lead
It’s bad enough when it’s First Team

People say if they cut me
I’d bleed Pink and Blue
I hate to disappoint
But it simply ain’t true.

Hi Denys,
Yes Richard Williams you’re a brilliant wordsmith, my friend. When I first saw your football poetry I thought it was the superb Guardian sports and music writer. I once had the honour of sitting next to Richard Williams while at the Independent on the sports desk. He writes about music and sport with immense knowledge and authority. I’ve read a couple of Richard’s books recently. Great writer rather like you Richard Williams the Pompey fan. Congratulations on promotion.

Hi Joe
Shouldn’t your title read your poem Farewell Europe England to everyone exccept Aston Villa ?
I know you mention them in your poem , but I do feel sorry for Villa re the national press .
Largely ignored. the hype was was all about Man City & Arsenal with a bit of a nod to the Hammers..but hardly a mention of Villa..
So well done to them

Hi Crispin. Chris Sutton on the radio has gone for a Chelsea v Coventry final. As we know anything can happen in the Cup, and I reckon we can go to the final.
We’re still in with a chance of the play offs too, so lots to go for.

Hey Kev
Let the masses drool over their odds on City v Unted Final, but who knows how pressure can hit.
Cov and Chels will be rightly labelled as having no chance..but hey …stranger things have happened..
so Chelsea v Coventry…that’s the Final for us!
Best
